This is a beautiful and Fine Antique Old California Plein Air Landscape Painting, Watercolor on Paper, depicting a bucolic and enchanting Southern California forest scene. Tall, delicately rendered spindly trees populate the foreground of the image, while a pale blue mountain vista is visible through the dense tree line, in the far distance. This painting exhibits an exemplary competency and skill with watercolors, a medium which is much harder to master when compared with oil paints. This artwork is by the hand of seldomly the seen African - American early California plein air painter, Ella Thomas (1894 - 1947.) Signed: \"E. Thomas\" in the lower left corner.\" Additionally, an old, yellowed label taped to the verso reads: \"Ella Thomas. Black Artist. 1894 - 1947.\" This piece likely dates to the 1920\'s - early 1930\'s. Approximately 19 3/4 x 29 1/2 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 16 x 26 inches. Good condition for nearly a century of age, with mild scuffing, edge wear, and gilding loss to the original period antique gilded wood frame (please see photos.) To my knowledge, this is the first original painting by Ella Thomas to ever be offered for sale since the invention of the Internet. Acquired in Los Angeles County, California.
