Trilby is a novel by George du Maurier. Originally serialized in Harper’s Monthly the novel went on to become an international bestseller. Trilby is set in the 1850s in an idyllic bohemian Paris and it is a fascinating portrayal of its times, holding up a mirror to fin de siècle obsessions with sexuality, mesmerism and the occult.
The novel tells the story of Trilby O’Ferrall, an artist’s model in Paris, a young Irishwoman, who despite her beauty and captivating stage presence, proves completely tone-deaf, all-but ensuring a life of drudgery as a laundress and artist’s model. Following the tragic loss of her younger brother, Trilby turns to Svengali for guidance. Using hypnosis, Svengali turns Trilby into a gifted singer, sending her into a trance every time she steps on stage. Svengali & Trilby travel throughout Europe on successful concert tours. From here, it’s a story of rescuing Trilby from herself and more, from the influence of Svengali and his desire to keep her under his spell.
CONDITION: This book is in acceptable condition. Cover is worn, scuffed and stained. Minor scuffing on the head. Fairly minor binding/spine discoloration and deterioration. Pages have turned yellow from age. Foxing to paper commensurate with age. There is a small tear on page 16. There is some writing on the endpaper at the front of the book. Previous ownership bookplate affixed to front pastedown endpaper. There are some water-based stains, some edge stains. Please see pictures.
