Gleason\'s Pictorial Drawing-room Companion April 1, 1854
Henry Meade was 20-years old, when he set up hisdaguerreotypestudio in Albany, New York, in 1842. He opened the shop with his brother, Charles, who was just 16. Together the duo, accompanied by their sister Mary Ann, would help introduce the new technology to America, popularizing the portraits sometimes called the “mirror with a memory.” They would eventually move to New York City, first to Brooklyn’s Williamsburg, and then to Manhattan. Their shop at 233 Broadway was prime real estate and just a short walk from Mathew Brady’s studio.
Proposed Elevated Railroad Terrace For Broadway, New York appeared in Gleasons Pictorial Drawing-room Companion, April 1, 1854. J.B. Wiskersham proposed a horse railway on one side and a pedestrian promenade on the other. There was some interest in the plan, but the issues of the slow speed and of the disposal of wastes deposited by the horses worked against it.

Gleason\'s Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion was an illustrated periodical published in Boston, Massachusetts, founded by Frederick Gleason in 1851. The magazine absorbed the Illustrated News of New York in 1853. It became Ballou\'s Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion in 1855, after managing editor Maturin Murray Ballou bought out the interest of Gleason.
