Alpha Photo-Engraving Company
KID GLEASON~ 1894 Baltimore Orioles
REPRINT
The original of obscure 19th century baseball card is rare indeed. Alpha Photo-Engraving Co. cards are so tough to find that only one complete set is known to exist!
Now available is aREPRINT EDITION depicting 1894 Baltimore Orioles player KID GLEASON. The average collector cannot affordan original Alpha Photo-Engraving card. Few exist and Old Cardboard magazine conservatively values commons in VG at $5,000 (each). This great REPRINT edition looks very much like the original but is quite affordable.
We should add that original cards for Clarke and Keeler are not known but are suspected to exist since each appeared on cabinet cards of the day and Keeler appeared in [Frank] Leslie\'s Illustrated, the long-running weekly of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
About the subject: Kid Gleason was an excellent 19th century pitcher (nearly 140 wins in 8 seasons) who hurt his arm and switched to everyday playing where he excellent as well - batting .261 with nearly 2,000 hits in all or parts of 22 major league seasons. He had the misfortune of being at the helm of the 1919 Chicago White Sox - a great club he guided to the American League title in his first year as manager.
