HENRY DISTIN MFG.CO.

The Distins\' were a family of British Musicians in the 19th century who performed on saxhorns and were influential in the evolution of brass instruments in then popular music.

The Distins first established themselves as instrument makers in London. Henry John Distin sold the family firm to Boosey & Co. in 1868 and immigrated to the US in 1877, first setting up shop as an instrument maker in New York and later opening the Henry Distin Manufacturing Co. in Williamsport, Pennsylvania in 1886. His innovative designs helped to shape horn and drum making in America….from The Metropolitan Museum, New York

An as found, nickle silver over brass mellophone or altophone made by Henry Distin Mfg. Co., Williamsport, Pa. The horn\'s 3 valves are each marked 40, 41, 42. In addition, the center valve is marked 16015. The horn is further marked on the bell with the company\'s logo and serial number. The Serial Number 14356 dates the horn to 1896. The mouth-piece is of the period and is marked Henry Distin.

The Mellohorn is in fair condition with a stuck valve stem and key missing on the center valve. There is silver loss overall. Several soldier repairs, and a creased bell are noted. The horn needs a good cleaning and polish.

Still, a wonderful displace piece of American Musical Instrument History for the beginning collector or decorator. Henry Distin instruments are displayed in several museums including the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
