On the Player - John Joseph McGraw (1873 – 1934) is a prominent figure in Major League Baseball history, excelling as both a player and manager. Born in poverty in Truxton, New York, baseball became McGraw\'s escape from adverse circumstances. At the young age of 18, he joined the Baltimore Orioles, where he played third base for the successful 1890s teams. His playing career spanned stints with the Baltimore Orioles (1891–1899; 1901-1902), St. Louis Cardinals (1900), and New York Giants (1902–1906). However, it was his managerial prowess with the New York Giants (1902–1932) that solidified McGraw\'s legacy. Under his leadership, the Giants won ten pennants and three World Series titles. With 2,763 victories as a manager, McGraw ranks third in all-time wins behind Connie Mack and Tony LaRussa. Revered as one of baseball\'s greatest managers, McGraw was dedicated to mentoring young players. He was posthumously elected to the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937.
On the Card - I seldom voice concerns about a card\'s grade, but this particular card has left me puzzled. The corners are sharp and crisp, and the color on the card front is exceptional. It is challenging to come across another T206 graded at “2” that boasts such a strong appearance. However, there is fading noticeable on the card back, which might have influenced the reviewer\'s decision to grade it as a “2.”
On the Set - The 1909-1911 T206 set is considered by many as the most important baseball card set in the hobby field. Together with the 1933 Goudey and 1952 Topps sets, the T206 completes the “Big Three” classic baseball card sets. Affectionately named “The Monster” based on its 524-card size, the T206 is home to some of the most valuable vintage baseball cards, including the famed T206 Honus Wagner rarity.
