1918 Austria War Loan Bond - World War I - 1000 crowns (eintausend kronen) For Sale

Austria was allied with Germany during World War I, and at the end of the war, the Austrian economy was in tatters, much as that of Germany. Austria sold high-interest bonds to finance its operation and recovery from the European conflict.

For sale is an Austria War Bond for 1,000 kronen (crowns). It is dated June 1, 1918, and the debt was to be repaidSeptember 1,1926. The bond carried interest of 5 1/2 %, payable twice annually. With thedepression in Europe, Austriadefaulted on the bond in 1919, and neither the principal nor the dividends were paid.

This is a beautiful bond, with detailed color artwork. It measures appx 15 x 9 1/2 inches and is printed on medium-weight paperstock. Attached to the bond ae 13 dividend coupons, each of which measures appx 4 x 1 1/2 inches. Language on the front of the bond is German.The back side of the bond contains various bond provisions in 7 languages -- Polish(2 dialects), Czech, Russian, Slovenian, Italian andRomanian. It was printed in Vienna, Austria.

This bond is in very good condition, even considering that it is approaching 100 years old. All writing/markings are from its issuance and processing. The bond has no rips or tears, but the interest coupon sheet has a small corner tear. It shows moderate wear.
