This is a new old stock, genuine Ford/FoMoCo, 80 pound oil pressure sending unit, in the original box with part # 41A-9278. This part is mint with decent silver cad plating and has never been installed (no oil residue and no wrench marks at the threaded end). This unit is stamped 80 on the square brass area and is of course 6 volt. This N.O.S. unit is made by King-Seeley for Ford and bears their mark ‘KS’ in a circle stamped on the top cover and ‘UP’, in case the unit is mounted horizontally, is opposite the KS.

It fits all Ford, Linc and Merc vehicles including pickups and trucks, 1945 thru 1948.

NOTE- this 80LB sending unit will not replace the 50LB sending unit # 48-9278 used in 1935- 1942 Ford, Mercury and Lincoln vehicles. I feel your pain! The 50LB sender is even harder to find than this 80LB unit.

Beware of modern replacement units sold by most suppliers, which look nothing like this original and correct oil sending unit. The replacement unit is only a pressure switch and basically turns your gauge into nothing more than an idiot light, making it read either zero or full scale. This 41A-9728 sender allows your dash gauge to read the actual oil pressure as it was originally designed by Ford. This original sender will probably never be correctly reproduced as there are many intricate parts inside. This includes: a diaphragm, resistance wire wrapped around a bi-metallic spring and a pair of contacts similar to ignition points. There is also a carbon resistor, fine wire and other necessary parts such as a mounting plate and adjustment mechanism to calibrate the unit before the factory crimps the cover on.

When the engine is running the contacts inside the sender are constantly opening and closing, establishing an average current in the circuit allowing the dash gauge to read the correct oil pressure; the higher the pressure, the higher the current. You do not usually see the gauge needle pulsing as these contacts open and close as the gauge is purposely designed to be slow to respond just for this reason. The contacts in the sender do eventually arc and corrode, but since the current is very low as compared to an ignition system, this takes a long time. My point is, if you buy this sending unit, it should last a long time, especially if your vehicle is 6 volts. If your vehicle is 12 volts, be sure this sending unit only operates at 6 volts by utilizing some device to reduce the 12 volts.
