This rare 1954s Lincoln Wheat Penny has a story... It features the BIE RIT 54S 6F+1, an almost unknown error for that year, plus the L is on the rim and the 9 has an error.
It was 2022 when I discovered the blob on this penny and researched hi and low all over the Internet and in my books, it fully consumed me for weeks! I thought if this turned out to have an originally found error, all the time I’ve ever poured into my quirky love for coins, as far as my family thinks, will finally all get validated. Then I found cuds-on-coins.com and saw instructions on how to send in pics to get your coin error documented as the first in the database, so I jumped on it!
I emailed JC Stevens at Cuds-on-coins.com website, and soon he emailed back and he said,
….“ Hi Heather, you have a “die “chip called a BIE RIT chip. It’s listed in the BIE handbook as 54S – 6F + 1 (the refI# I chose to use) and in “The classification and value of errors on the Lincoln cent” by Jean Cohen and it’s listed as 54S-B1105 on page 31. It’s not listed on my cuds-on site. If you would like me to list it, please follow the instructions in the link below and send me the six required cropped and resized photos”…. and so on…
So I sent him the proper images and then started bragging prematurely, because about an hour later another email came…..
JC said he’d found where he already listed the first one back in September 2017, and then he followed with an upside to confirm the 9 in 1954 is an error, but the former was such a bummer. I never did anything else with it since. So, consider this coin one possibly #4 ever presented, just not officially. I was bummed and tossed the penny in its drawer.
And now 2 yrs later I'm sorting new coins out and pick this one up, I had all but forgotten about it, and now have decided to list it here.
