After more than 20 years of trying, Ford finally did it for 1957; it outsold arch-rival Chevrolet for the first time since the Great Depression!

Other than the two-seat Thunderbird, Ford’s only other car model in ’57 was what became the full-size Fairlane, named for Henry Ford’s Michigan estate. This example was made on June 3, 1957 in Ford’s Atlanta, Georgia factory.

Dressed in Raven Black with white trim, the car has an older build, which shows some age and wear. The chrome front bumper fits tightly to the body and the engine bay is very tidy.

This Ford rolls on Michelin radials, size 215/65R15 at every corner. Each tire is mounted to a chrome reverse wheel. The tires are in very good order while the chrome wheels look fantastic.

If don’t mind a Ford driveline, look under the hood. There’s a 472 CID Cadillac V-8 engine, bored .030 over replaced the stock Ford V-8 engine with an aluminum radiator. Backing the motor is a Turbo Hydramatic 400 three-speed automatic transmission. Driver convenience features include power steering, a power driver’s seat and power drum brakes.

Inside the Colonial Black vinyl interior looks great, complete with front seats from a Ford Thunderbird. The black carpet is in decent order while the inner door panels look good. The black dashboard looks great with floor-mounted B&M shifter. A modern AM/FM stereo with CD player resides in the dashboard. White, fuzzy dice add a touch of whimsy.

For 1957, a new style gave a longer, wider, lower and sleeker look with low tailfins. The new proportions and modern styling were a hit with customers to such an extent that the Ford outsold Chevrolet in 1957 for the first time since 1935. A new top trim level, the Fairlane 500 was added to the Fairlane model line and the Country Squire continued to be the luxury station wagon while the Country Sedan was now added to the Fairlane model line, while engine choices were largely the same as the year before.

Competition to this Ford in 1957 included Chevrolet’s Bel-Air Sport Coupe, Plymouth’s Belvedere, Pontiac’s Chieftain Catalina and Studebaker’s Silver Hawk.
