1962 Fender Musicmaster with a body-only natural refinish, with its original hardshell case. The guitar is in excellent condition, plays well, and sounds great with the original pickup, wiring, and electronics. The potentiometer that has a visible date is from the 18th week of 1962. All components are original to this guitar, with the following exceptions:
1. The neck plate (and screws) is a replica stamped with the guitar’s original serial number.
2. The neck is from a different Fender Musicmaster from 1963 (neck stamp 3/4 1963 A). The neck itself is in all-original condition except for the tuners and tuner screws are modern replicas. Tuner ferrules are original to this neck.
3. The body was refinished to natural in the 1980s based on permanent marker notes that are covered by the pickguard. The refinish is amateur-level with some roughness in the cutaway contours near the neck pocket.
The guitar is currently set up with 11s and plays well all up and down the neck. Frets and fretboard are in excellent condition as can be seen in the pictures. The tone is what would be expected from an early 1960s Fender: great! The nut width is approximately 1.5” and the scale length is 22.5”. Average weight. The back of the neck has several shallow dings/marks as shown in the pictures but they are not especially noticeable or distracting during playing.
The case is in good condition for its age, and the handle and all latches are in functional order. The latches even spring up when opening which is somewhat rare on these older cases. The upper lid has a small area of orange liner detached , but it is not floppy or bothersome. There is an also a small area of the case where the casewood is slightly damaged where the endpin guitar strap button rests, but it’s not a problem. No bad odors to the case or guitar.
All in all, this guitar is a fine example of the quality that the Fender company was producing during the pre-CBS era, even with their entry-level guitars such as the Musicmaster and Duo Sonic.
