Up for sale, a 1969 Sunn 2000S vintage tube bass amplifier stack with matching Sunn 2x15 speaker in excellent condition and in perfect working order. The brainchild of Norm Sundholm, bass player for the Kingsmen, and his brother Conrad, the Sunn company was birthed out of the need for gear that reproduced powerful, rich clean tones that could compete on the world\'s largest stages (not the least of which was Woodstock, where Sunn supplied the backline). The Sunn 2000S led that charge in the bass world, and the hi-fi clarity and sweet warmth of this all tube bass head is oft-copied but rarely replicated. With absolutely massive transformers and a dual rectified four 6550 powered circuit, this 2000S head powers a vintage Sunn 2x15 speaker cabinet with original JBL D140F 15\" drivers. These highly efficient and powerful speakers are in indispensable part of the Sunn sound, and the thick, clear low end reproduced by these speakers is legendary in the bass world. The list of Sunn bass amp users is prolific and includes Geddy Lee, John Paul Jones, John Entwistle, and Noel Redding.
This 2000S head has been freshly serviced, with a complete and professional recap of the power supply, as well as a modern three-prong power cable. The tubes are two matched pairs of 6550s which have been properly biased for optimal headroom and life. While the output transformer and both chokes are original, the power transformer is a brand new USA made exact replacement, faithfully crafted by Mercury Magnetics, who spared no expense in reproducing this impressive iron behemoth. The original CTS pots are intact as well and date the amp to 1969.
The speaker cab was produced a year or two later than the head, with a slightly different style of original grillcloth, although it pairs very well with the head and features the same rough, dark gray tolex. This is a rare transitional speaker cab, with two round central ports, unlike the folded horn cab that preceded it and the larger side port cab that would come later. One JBL speaker retains its original cone and one was reconed long ago to factory specs. Both speakers have clean gray frames and retain their original labels on the alnico magnet bells.
Both the head and cabinet retain their original hardware including handles, corners, and casters. Cosmetically, both head and cabinet have been thoroughly cleaned, with only light scuffs and nicks on the two enclosures, and mild aging of the grillcloth. The original metal Sunn logos are both present as well.
