16" x 20" Signed Art Printof The Bradley Central High School in Cleveland, Tennesseeby E. Howard Burger
In the years immediately prior to World War I interested citi-zens in Bradley County made repeated attempts to persuade theproper authorities to appropriate funds for the building of afour-year high school. Not until 1915 were bonds voted for a newbuilding to be just north of the Cleveland city limits on LeeHighway, and to be known as Bradley Central High School. Indue time an attractive brick structure was completed, with theClass of 1917 being the first graduates.Q. M. Smith was the first principal, with others being W. B.Parks, A. L. Rankin, Roy Anderson, E. J. Frazier, G. B. Tripp,Clifton (Tip) Smith, C. A. Kyle, Emil Farr, Roy Wiseman, CondonWasson and Bill Schultz.Steady growth caused such over-crowding that in 1935 Pub-lic Works Administration helped to add space, and in 1936 class-rooms, a study hall, and library were added to the north andsouth wings, as well as the enlargement and reconditioning ofthe gymnasium.During 1947 and 1948 a separate auditorium was built on thenorth campus, and a new gymnasium built. New classroomswere made in the old auditorium. In 1956, still being hounded byover-capacity, a new wing was added on the south side to housea new library, cafeteria, space for the band, art, homeeconomics, industrial arts and vocational agriculture depart-ments.Finally, in 1972, after years of successful operations, academically, as well as athletically, Bradley Central High Schoolmoved to the new location on South Lee Highway, this newcomplex coming about through the leadership of SuperintendentWilliam R. Walker and Principal Bill Schultz. The Cleveland National Bank gratefully gives credit to Miss Eugenia Rodgers, head of the Social Science Department of Bradley Central High School, for theabove information.
In April of 1973 The Cleveland National Bank and E.Howard Burger entered into an agreement whereby Mr.Burger would produce a series of drawings of memorablesites in this area, and prints of these would be distributedby the bank. The artist is a native Tennessean, having been born andhaving grown up just outside Bradley County. He was a freelance artist at the age of fifteen. An electrical engineer by profession, he has never losthis keen desire to sketch and paint. After thirty two yearswith the telephone company, he retired to pursue his firstlove—painting the beauty of landscapes and historicallandmarks, particularly in Bradley County.Mr. Burger’s trademark is authenticity. He spends asmuch time in preparation for a painting as doing the paint-ing itself, taking innumerable photographs, makingsketches, and doing research. It is felt that you will enjoy this latest print to the sameextent that previous ones have been received. The Cleve-land National Bank is proud to play this part in perpetuat-ing the memory of a past era.
