19th C. William Tonks & Sons 12 3/4" Brass + Crystal Inkstand with Griffin Stand For Sale

Beautiful mid to late 19th century William Tonks and Sons brass inkstand with crystal inkwell, c. 1840's-90's. The inkstand features a central square crystal vessel with brass lid flanked on either side by two brass griffins. The inkwell is a ribbed swirl crystal with heavy brass removable lid with flowers and leaves. Base of stand and griffins are marked "W, T & S/ Rd 272517/ T.1840". Measures 12 3/4" long x 6 1/8" wide x 6 1/4" high. The brass stand is without issue. There is a chip to the corner base of the crystal inkwell as well as chipping to the rim, wear to the lid, uncertain if it is the original lid to the inkwell, though rests on top nicely. The brass inkstand shows the natural patina as found, and has not been polished, does not sit entirely straight and my need adjusting.William Tonks and Sons, Moseley Street, Birmingham, founded 1794. The Tonks family surname is the lists of Birmingham brassfounders before the 1800s. William Tonks founded this firm in 1789 (or 1794?). They won gold medals at the 1851 and 1862 Exhibitions in London and in 1855 at Paris The larger factory in Moseley Street was opened in the early 1860s and most items now found will date from after this time.
