2 Juanita Lucero Paintings, Taos Pueblo, SW U.S.:
$110.00

The two paintings are both signed \"Juanita Lucero.\" Juanita Lucero was an artist, and model for visiting artists (most notable being the portrait \"Juanita Lucero and her Children\" by Catherine Critcher), in the Taos Pueblo.
These two paintings were purchased from an estate sale in northern Michigan. The original owner moved to northern Michigan from South Bend, IN. Possessions in the former estate indicated multiple trips to the U. S. SW.
Dimensions for both paintings:
  • Mat is 11\" Wide X 8.25\" High
  • Image area is 5.75\" High X 8.25\" Wide
  • Paper size is 8.25\" High X 11\" Wide
The paintings are on heavy artist\'s paper, maybe watercolor paper.
To me, the paint appears to be acrylic, but could be watercolor applied somewhat dry. The paper is slightly wrinkled, indicating, to me, that the paper was wet/damp when paint was applied. So, it could well be a watercolor. When I look at the paint it does not appear to bleed. That is what caused me to speculate on acrylic.
I removed the matted paintings from their original frames. The paintings were originally framed in South Bend. The framer taped the paintings to the mats.
The following comments are speculation on my part, so please do not take these as established fact. I believe the Lucero paintings to be \"plein air\" done for sale to visitors to Taos Pueblo. Juanita Lucero posed for a Critcher portrait in the mid 1920\'s. Information I could find indicates the Lucero took up the art/craft of painting.
From viewing the possessions in many estates here in Michigan, it is seems that many mid-western folks, and certainly many Michiganders, during the 1950\'s and 60\'s traveled to Arizona and the SW. Their trips included tours of the Native American communities open to non-natives. It is my belief that Juanita Lucero became an artist while living in Taos Pueblo and offered her works to to visitors. The two paintings I am offering came out of the estate of a couple that originally lived in South Bend IN, apparently traveled to the U. S. SW, collected various SW items on their trips, and finally retired to NW Michigan. I purchased the paintings from the estate several years ago.
I believe the paintings were done in the 1950\'s or early 60\'s.
As I said above, please take the three foregoing paragraphs as my guess only. I offered this based on what I have been able to learn from scanty records.
Please send me your questions.
