The Story-In his offer to win the English throne, William,Duke of Normandy, landed on England\'ssouthern coast in the autumn of 1066. King Harold II, whose army had justdefeated Norwegian invaders at Stratford Bridge, immediatelymarched south to face the new threat. William\'s afternoon assault finally sawthe English formation begin to disintegrate. Pouring through breaches punched inHarold\'s line, Norman cavalry cut down their foes, including the stricken Kingwho is famously depicted in the Bayeaux Tapestry with an arrow in his eye.

The Battle of Hastings was fought on 14 October1066 between the Norman-French army of Duke William II of Normandyand an English army under the Anglo-Saxon King Harold Godwinson, beginning theNorman conquest of England. It took place approximately 7 miles (11 kilometers) northwest of Hastings, close to the present-day town of Battle, East Sussex, andwas a decisive Norman victory.

The background to the battle was the death ofthe childless King Edward in January 1066, which set up a successionstruggle between several claimants to his throne. Harold was crowned kingshortly after Edward\'s death, but faced invasions by William, his own brotherTostig and the Norwegian King Harald Hardrada (Harold III of Norway).Hardrada and Tostig defeated a hastily gathered army of Englishmen at theBattle of Fulford on 20 September 1066, and were in turn defeated by Harold atthe Battle of Stamford Bridge five days later. The deaths of Tostig andHardrada at Stamfordleft William as Harold\'s only serious opponent. While Harold and his forceswere recovering from Stamford, William landedhis invasion forces in the south of England at Pevensey on 28 September1066 and established a beachhead for his conquest of the kingdom. Harold wasforced to march south swiftly, gathering forces as he went.

The exact numbers present at the battle areunknown; modern estimates are around 10,000 for William and about 7,000 forHarold. The composition of the forces is clearer; the English army was composedalmost entirely of infantry and had few archers, whereas only about half of theinvading force was infantry, the rest split equally between cavalry andarchers. Harold appears to have tried to surprise William, but scouts found hisarmy and reported its arrival to William, who marched from Hastings to the battlefield to confrontHarold. The battle lasted from about 9 am to dusk. Early efforts of theinvaders to break the English battle lines had little effect; therefore, the Normans adopted thetactic of pretending to flee in panic and then turning on their pursuers.Harold\'s death, probably near the end of the battle, led to the retreat anddefeat of most of his army. After further marching and some skirmishes, Williamwas crowned as king in 1066.

There continued to be rebellions and resistanceto William\'s rule, but Hastings effectivelymarked the culmination of William\'s conquest of England. Casualty figures are hardto come by, but some historians estimate that 2,000 invaders died along withabout twice that number of Englishmen. The Battle of Hastings marked a pivotal momentin English history. In 1066, William Duke of Normandy’sfleet landed near Hastingswhere it engaged King Harold’s foot-weary army, recently returned from conflictin the north. A fierce battle raged for much of the day until the persistenceof William’s soldiers eventually succeeded in breaking through the Englishlines. During the battle, Harold was struck in the eye by a Norman arrow, afatal blow depicted in the 11th century Bayeaux Tapestry.
