Thisauthentic antique French Enamelware Body Pitcher is heavy and substantial.Unlike vintage body pitchers, it has multiple coats of enamel applied to itmaking the enamel thick andglossy.
Thiscan be seen by the glaze cracks, those wonderful little hairlines in theenamel, called \"craquelure\". Authentic antique pieces always havesome of this craquelure (see the bottom of photo #5 around the first scallop onthe right hand side of the handle and in areas around the base).
Also,the handle of this body pitcher was riveted on as apposed to being soldered on.The very early antique pieces always had these rivets (thosetiny protruding bumps you see in photos #5 and #9).
Thecolor is exquisite and clear and there are gilded gold bands all the way down.In fact, there arethirteen gilded gold bandswhich includes the rimand the base (though the band on the base is hard to see - but it’s there).
Thispiece would have been considered a very fancy, upscale pitcher in its day!The scalloped design on the pitcher was very time intensive to create and so itmade it considerably more expensive than the standard pitchers.
Noticethere are no enamel chips under the spout\'s rim. This pitcher would have beenused for more formal occasions when expensive glasses, most likely crystal, were being used. Great care was taken so that the glass and the pitcher did not bang against each other.
ThisFrench Body Pitcher, circa 1880’s is in remarkable condition for its age.
