Antique Electric Motor:
$127.30

This is a very old open frame, exposed winding motor. There is no manufacturing identification nor numbers. I gently cleaned it, applied two drops of light oil on each bushing, adjusted the copper brushes and replaced the felt on the bottom of the wood base. I applied three Volts and it ran great but suspect that six Volts would be better. The wood base measures 3 3/8th inch by 4 1/8th inch. It is three inches high. Please see the pictures.
This motor has a single coil stator that is in series with the rotor. It has copper brushes and a cast iron core.
Copper brushes are high maintenance but they are easily adjusted. Many scientists and inventors were looking for better brushes when Prof. George Forbes patented Carbon Brushes (then called graphite brushes) in 1883.
In 1875 Friedrich von Hefner-Alteneck started using iron wires instead of cast iron for the magnetic core, and iron wires were eventually replaced with laminated iron.
This motor is solid cast iron so is probably older that 1875. However these refinements probably took time to be incorporated into general usage so using these dates for dating this motor is probably not reliable.
The yellow in photos 6 and 7 are electric tape. I used it to show that the motor is running. This is a very simple motor that is totally exposed, safe and would be great to show and explain how it works.
Batteries not included.Thank you.
