Antique Grinnell Brothers Detroit Silver Cornet:
$280.00

This antique cornet was made in Austria (perhaps by Bohland & Fuchs) for the Grinnell Brothers of Detroit, MI. It has flat water key springs, which were introduced in the 1800\'s and went out of style in the early 1900\'s. Because of this and the fact that the Grinnell Brothers began selling instruments in the 1880\'s, this instrument was most likely made between 1880 and 1900.
Once known as a premier manufacturer anddistributorof organs and pianos, the Grinnell Brothers ofDetroitgrew to be one of the largest musical instrument merchandisers in the Midwest by the 1960\'s.The Grinnell Brothers stores carried all sorts of musical merchandise, from guitar picks, to cornets to $15,000 organs. The company was founded in Ann Arbor, MI in 1879 by Ira L. Grinnell, who began selling sewing machines. He eventually added musical instruments to his inventory. Along with his brothers Clayton and Herbert, Ira Grinnell opened a store in Ypsilanti before setting up shop in 1881 in an old wooden house on the east side of Woodward Avenue in Detroit. The piano business was booming and before long, the brothers had outgrown their shop and in 1908 they moved up the road into a beautiful Albert Kahn-designed department store building.
This cornet is in great condition. It is silver plated with a few spots of plating wear where the player held the instrument with his left hand (see photos). It has some very minor dings, but no major dents. It is in good playing condition; all valves and slides move freely. It plays in B-flat. It only comes with a mouthpiece, which does not have a maker\'s mark. It has the original case, which is functional, but shows signs of age/use. Please see photos for more details.
