ANTIQUE REGISTERED SHEFFIELD BRASS PLATED BRACE WITH BITCOLLECTION

Hereis a rare Robert Marples 1848 Registered brace made in Sheffield, England. Itis a design that started without the brass plates during the late 1700’s andearly in the 1800’s adapted the brass plates for strength and looks. It is astunning brace with a fine beech wood body and a lignum vitae turned head. Andof course all the brass – WOW! The chuck has the Robert Marples April 18, 1848Registered patent design with the spring catch for the notched tang of thedrill bits. This is the Registered design used on most of the higher qualityUltimatum braces. There are only about eight different Registered patents forthese braces and finding any is a rare find indeed. See the scan from Ken Roberts book on English Woodworking Tools as it shows Robert Marples earlier Registered brace with the button spring release and at the bottom of the page this brace with the double spring release Registered design. This brace is exactly the same brace design as shown on page 329 in Robert\'s book. In perfect workingcondition the spring is strong and a second spring is at the bottom holding thebit securely against the first spring. When a properly fitted bit is releasedit almost shoots out of the chuck from this second springs action. The brassplates have a dull shine natural patina with all the original screws. Thelignum head spins smoothly with no wobble. The head has a brass disc withspanner holes to remove and access the guts to adjust the tightness of thehead. With this brace comes a collection of various antique bits that is usedwith this type of brace. All are in usable, sharp condition and fit this brace.A fine collectible brace from the mid 1800’s and in good usable condition. Rarelydo you find a brace of this rarity in such fine condition. This is a historicaltool and should be put into a fine antique tool collection to preserve it forfuture generations.
