Thisantique drill brace was made by William Marples circa 1860. It is fully signed, along with stamped company name and product details, plus Royal Warrant, that refers to \"Her Majestys Royal Letters Patent\", (meaning Queen Victoria)
It still retains its original lacquered brass finish which hasn\'t been lost due to over polishing, like most have. Obviously it has been used, but not abused. It is in very decent condition considering age. NO DAMAGE.

The earliest reference toMARPLESmanufacturingWooden Bracesis to be found in the1846List, wherein are listed ‘Best Braces‘ (9/-ea.) and ‘Improved Plated Braces‘. (13/-ea.) The latter being exactly the same as the ‘Best‘ but with the added strength of brass plates inlet and screwed to the sides of the arms [which were the Achilles Heel of these braces being made of short grain timber and easily fractured under stress.] The ‘Improved PlatedBraces‘ could also be had with anImproved Brass NeckHeadfor2/-extra and were also available in Ebony, Box or Rosewood at12/-extra to the standard Plated Beech.

A giant step in technology and quality was the introduction of the ‘Ultimatum’ Brace, patented byMARPLESin1849.

Condition:used.Very good clean condition, with signs of moderate use and reasonable wear. Obviously this is a work tool, not an ornimental item, so will have signs of use as one would expect. Scarce in this condition.
