DESCRIPTION
Beautiful seaman\'s souvenir \"woolie tray\" with embroidered images of an eagle in flight, four American flags, a life ring surrounding a photo of the US Capitol Building, below the title \"GIBRALTAR PRESENT.\" The embroidery is under glass. These were often made by sailors themselves, or purchased in their ports of call as mementos and gifts for their families or friends back home. They were most popular from about 1860 to 1880. But the use of the 25-star American flag suggests this one may be earlier, perhaps dating to the late 1830s.
CONDITION
Overall excellent. All stitches intact. Some fading and stains. Some of the wicker wrapping attaching the border to the base has been replaced with wire (All visible in the images). A FINE AND EARLY 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN MARITIME PATRIOTIC RELIC.
