A Broken Basalt Pestle, Snake River Indian Artifact, Nez Perce Grinding Stone

• A very nice, smaller cylindrical  shaped pestle found in the 1950\'s just down river from the mouth of the Clearwater on the Snake River near the Idaho - Washington border.

• From the location it was found it is probably Nez Perce, but could possibly be Palouse (Palus) or even the Cayuse Tribe.  (The area where was found is named after Nez Perce Chief Timothy, but it was considered shared or common territory as all three tribes were close knit and would rendezvous there.)

• Crafted from volcanic basalt, this ancient artifact is greyish black with typical white speckling and was originally rounded on both ends for grinding food and medicine. 

• It is from an old family ranch estate on the Palouse breaks of the Snake across the river from what is today known as Chief Timothy Park.

• It was unearthed and found in the mid fifties, and was accidentally broken when it was ran over by the tracks on a farm tractor.

• Today, this type of collecting is strictly off-limits to any private collectors, which makes it still, even though broken, is a rare find.
