Columbia World Exposition Award by Augustus Saint-Gaudens & Charles Barber, 1893:
$538.15
Bronze medal by Augustus Saint-Gaudes (front) and Charles F. Barber (back) for the official award at the Columbia World Exposition held in Chicago in 1893 given to Baroness de Cortes. Being the last and largest World Fair of the 19th century. As a fun fact, Saint Gaudens\' original design for the reverse was rejected by Treasury Department officials because it showed a naked young man. So the Mint asked Charles Barber for a suitable replacement. On the front, just behind Christopher Columbus we can see a hooded man with a beard, it is Augustus Saint Gaudens himself, being considered the only known self-portrait of the greatest sculptor in America.
