Description:

First Edition Advance Review Copy (ARC) of Huey P. Long's colorful autobiography, distributed for review "To The Literary Editor"in advance of the autobiography's planned formal release on November 17th, 1933. Issued by Baker & Thompson Co. of New York to, presumably, "Mona Thomas" with her critical review affixed to the front pastedown. Published only two years before his assassination with only 20,000 of the 100,000 copies sold.An incredibly rare example. An exhaustive search located no other Advance Review Copies of this title. Perhaps a true, one-of-a-kind treasure.

To many during the Depression, Huey Long was “a political messiah… To others he was a dictator-in-waiting, described by Mencken as a backwoods Mussolini… When it came to Huey Long, who called himself ‘Kingfish,’ there was no middle ground” (New York Times). In this scarce first edition of his autobiography, Every Man a King, Long boldly tells his own story to counter the “garbled accounts of my career.” As Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and Long’s biographer, Thomas H. Williams, writes: “Long had a manuscript in final form by the summer of 1933. He asked George Allen to act as his agent in New York in dealing with printers… The first copies came off the press… in resplendent gold jackets which bore five pictures of the author. Although the work had been put together in New York, the title page carried the imprimatur of the National Book Company of New Orleans, which was the property of Long and some of his associates.” On publication, critics described Long’s autobiography as “filled with praise for himself, and denunciation for his enemies… but primarily an argument for his favorite theme—redistribution of wealth” (New York Times). Two years after publication, Long was assassinated in the lobby of the Louisiana state capitol. With frontispiece and over 25 pages of black-and-white photogravures, along with many full-page and in-text printings of political cartoons.
