I LISTED THIS VERY RADIO WAY BACK IN DECEMBER 2008.
CERTAIN BLINKERED RADIO BUFFS ON A WELL-KNOWN RADIO FORUM
QUESTIONED ITS AUTHENTICITY, FAR FROM CONVINCED IT WAS 'RIGHT'.

SO, UNIMPRESSED, ANNOYED AND FRUSTRATED,
BUT CERTAIN OF MY ACCURACY, I PULLED THE sale.SOME OF MY STORY I OUTLINE AT THE BASE OF THIS DESCRIPTION......I CAN SEND THE FULL STORY AND DIALOGUE UPON REQUEST.

IT IS A SCARCE 'WOODEN CABINET' VARIANTOF THE CATALIN FADA 53XINDEED THIS WOODEN CABINET MAY WELL BE THE RAREST OF ALLI HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE MODEL NUMBER SHOULD BE OR WOULD BE,IF INDEED IT WAS EVER RETAILED/MARKETED WITH THE FADA MARQUE 53X - S5F60X - 5F50 ?PERHAPS SOMEBODY OUT THERE KNOWS...
HERE'S TWO EXAMPLES OF THE CATALIN VERSION:

ORIGINALLY INTRODUCED / RELEASED IN 1938/39

CONDITION REPORT

The condition isextremely good throughout. Thecabinet is excellent, with a rich patina, and strong graining. Beautiful, flawless and fully intact. There are no cracks, no splits, no stresses, no breaks, no chips, no dings, no hairlines, no lifts, and no repairs. The top has the faintest ripple. There are no scratches nor marks of significance, anything surface and will polish out. The fascia presents magnificently, so too the louvres, which are near perfect, just the smallest dimple visible in the images. The patina is rich anduniform throughout. There is no warpage, nor woodworm.

Theunique dial, and airplane pointer are also original. The three stunning identical knobs are strongly marbelized/swirled, in perfect condition - and almost certainly original. They appear to some to be brown, but could wellhave oxidized from green catalin. They look green catalin to me, but no promises. Each have their grubscrew and are DEFINITIVELY NOT made out of wood!

The insidesare clean, showing no signs of restoration. Two valves/tubes are missing. The Quam-Nicholls speaker stands proud, its label also. Used extensively in Fada radios during the 1930s. this is another crucial link. The chassis screwsare replacements, whilst the rubber feet are original. There is no back panel nor plug, whilst the cord has been lopped. *Please look at my caveat at the base of the description.

Overall, this beauty is better condition than one would expect of a radio three generations old, but I never offer a load of patronising waffle about 'eminent qualifications' regarding a radio's functionality, fancy declarations about professional restoration, nor what may or may not have gone on inside, whilst I always adhere to British Law, which dictates that I can indeed offer no guarantees as to working condition, so offer no promises nor guarantees, and invite interested parties and potential buyers to look at my *caveat near base/foot of this description...ALL GALLERY IMAGES DEPICT THE ACTUAL RADIO FOR SALE IN THIS sale,SO TOO SOME EXTRA 'BONUSES' BELOW
* PLEASE BE AWARE THAT IMAGES SHOW GLARE AND REFLECTION ONLY - I would also be happy upon request to supply higher resolution images of any thumbnails which are not included in the gallery or below. Fada collectors: make up your own mind - you wont see another in a hurry.

My quality packaging is well-reputed throughout the world, especially with the rarest of vintage radios, whilst I am always happy to combine shipping if/when appropriate. FROM THE MID-1980s I PASSIONATELY BUILT UP MY COMPREHENSIVE 'INTERNATIONAL' VINTAGE WIRELESS COLLECTION TO SEVERAL HUNDRED PIECES. FOREVER 'ORGANICALLY' DEVELOPING BY TRADING AND SWAPPING, IT BECAME ENHANCED/COMPLIMENTED WITH SEVERAL SPECIAL 'CORNERS'. ONE UNIQUE 'NICHE' INCLUDED VARIOUS US 'EXPORT' MODELS PRODUCED BY SUCH DIVERSE COMPANIES SUCH AS FADA, EMERSON, DETROLA, SPARTON, MAJESTIC, RCA, PHILCO, IRC/KADETTE, GENERAL ELECTRIC, BELMONT, DeWALD, EVEN A PURE OIL DOLLS HOUSE.
SOMETIMES CARRYING SUBTLE DIFFERENCES FROM THEIR 'HOMEGROWN' SISTERS, THE IMPORTANT CRITERIA WAS THAT ALL WERE TOTALLY AUTHENTIC AND ORIGINAL. MANY MODELS CARRIED AN EXTRA WAVEBAND, SOME HAD DIFFERENT LOGOS, MARQUES, OR NAMES, WHILST A FEW HAD NEVER BEEN RETAILED ON THE US MARKET. NEEDLESS TO SAY THIS INVARIABLY CREATED MUCH DEBATE, SOME QUITE CYNICAL, FROM 'ACROSS THE POND', LARGELY BECAUSE OF THE SOMETIMES INSULAR NATURE OF NORTH AMERICAN COLLECTORS - A SITUATION WHICH THE INTERNET HAS PARTLY HELPED TO IMPROVE, WITH THE RICH FOUNTAIN OF INFORMATION AVAILABLE HELPING TO EDUCATE THE WILLING, ALTHOUGH SADLY IN SOME CASES IT HAS BECOME A FIREPIT PRONE TO BAYING TROLLS...
As this could well be the rarest 'Fada-related' radio ever made, although I will avoid shouting from the rooftops, I feel I have something important to say of particular relevance to some of vintage radio's often self-appointed 'cognesci'. Some collectors of tend to only believe the existence of an object if it is featured in a book, or on a website, many relying on such, a few obstinately ignoring that collecting is learning. As a globally-respected collector of vintage radios for thirty years, I have always made it a mission to trace radios NOT in any books, successfully building a significant exclusive collection of US 'export' radios, in wood, bakelite and catalin - Emerson, Detrola, GE, Garod, De Wald, Ekco etc etc - often giving pride-of-placein my comprehensive 'global' collection, wheich topped out in the high hundreds. Supposedly 'knowledgeable' afficionados had previously mocked the existence of a Sparton 'Peachbird', a Stewart Warner 'Good Companion' speaker, a Wurlitzer 'organ-pipe' cathedral, an Indian black Ekco lookalike, an Emerson wooden 'O' Grille, and a scattering of other 'unknowns'... some subtle, some off-the-wall variants. All turned out to be totally authentic, and those were reluctantly seated in front of a plate of humble-pie... All turned out to be totally authentic, and those nay-sayers were reluctantly dished out a plate of humble-pie... But, with the power of social media, the tenacious non-believers are never far away. When I first listed this radio WAY back over New Year 2008/09, rightfully expecting to further enrich collectors' knowledge, although enouraging debate, fair debate and information, I was woefully unimpressed that my sale was tarnished by inconsidered troll-like comments on a well-known radio forum. I decided to pull it. I wonder if those four quick-to-criticise trolls, one a Fada dealer and distributor, have had a chance to ruminate ever since, and reflect over the second example of this beauty (shown above) in the mix - but then they didn't even acknowledge it all those years ago...

*CAVEAT: I always carry a caveat in my descriptions with regards working condition because, due to the extreme law bestowed upon us in the UK concerning vintage electrical/electronic items, I am not permitted to declare as such. I am not a technician, and working condition, completenessand originality dutifully come with absolutely no assurances nor guarantees. Unless I myself am advised upon purchase/acquisition that a radio is working, and has been internally checked and/or restored, I am seldom inquisitive enough to even switch a radio on. My unique collection of 700+ of radios from all corners of the globe was built up on trust, but was always with aesthetics and scarcity regarded as the most important issue, with working condition of only periphery importance. Several thousands of radios have gone through my hands over 25 years, and I unswervingly always declare: "offered as collector's and/or display items only, before attempting to plug into the mains, ALL electrical items must be checked over by somebody qualified to do so". I offer no promises, indeed always offer my radiosas a collector's and/or display item only. Thus under UK Law, before attempting to plug into the mains, ALL electrical items must be checked over by somebody qualified to do so. Thanks for your interest and good luck should you choose to offer on this attractive piece of nostalgia.
