Here we have a small stoneware or pottery beer or soda bottle impressedon the shoulder “Gibbens & Shourds”.Bottle is 6-1/4” tall and 2-3/8” in diameter and is in fair condition witha ½” wide flat flake off the rear of the lip but no other chips, cracks, orother damage. Displays mint as the flakeis on the back.
This is the only example of this particular bottle I haveever seen. I can’t imagine it was costeffective…this can’t have contained more than maybe 6 ounces of fluid. The glass bottles from this company seem tobe quite uncommon as well.
David H. Shourds and Charles J. Gibbens were bottlerslocated at 119 N 2nd St in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1870until 1877, when they appear to have split ways and gone into business independently. In 1876, David Shourds got a patent on ademijohn design (patent number 175178) that was basically a wooden barrel witha cast iron “bottle” top.
The glaze on this bottle has an interesting “sparkle” to it.
