Grandfather Painted Clock (circa late 18c.):
$2000.00

I have a beautiful Danish Grandmother clock for sale from the late 1700s. This clock is a fairly typical design of tall case, grandfather or floor case clock style. The delicate shape of this and the light wood and milk paint would make this more of a grandmother clock than a grandfather clock. In general terms, grandmother clocks were slightly less heavy, and large with a more feminine character than the often rectangular shapes of the more imposing grandfathers. The clock is known as a Bornholmer, which is where it was made, a Danish island in the Baltic Sea east of Denmark. It is also considered to be a \"country clock\" as opposed to a \"city clock\" which would have been walnut or mahogany or oak and not painted in this fashion. It is in working order and checked by horologist. (A clock of this age would need to have slight adjustments on a weekly basis to keep time). The movement has a two bell system, one bell is struck on the hour and the other on the half hour (not a bim-bam). It has the original key for the bone keyhole escutcheon. It has great lines and a wonderful distressed look being \"in paint\". It is off white/cream/ivory in color. The milk paint appears to be thick and the surface has almost a bumpy texture to it. This clock would look outstanding in either a cottage/country home or as a \"stand-out piece\" of art in a more contemporary home. The serial number on the clock is 374 listed as Claus Bohn No. 374 on the front of the clock. I had some research done and found that the clock maker was Claus Jorgensen Bohn, from Denmark on the island of Borholm in the second half of the 18th century. One of his clocks (#162) is apparently housed in the Bornholm Museum. It appears that Bohn was primarily a shipwright and farmer, but also possibly self-taught clockmaker. Bohn also had a son named Claus who possibly being a clockmaker as well. It was possible that the son took over and continued with his father\'s profession. The clock has wear consistent with age and use. There are two small areas of minor damage. Both are shown in the pictures. A one inch chip is on the corner of the top portion. The other area is on the wood cover that encloses the interior of the clock and is 1.25\". This clock comes in 2 parts so it can be easily moved.  94\"high by 18.5\" wide and 10.75”deep
