This 1910 book looks like it would be a handy reference book for 21st century homesteaders, as it contains instructions to build literally 100s of simple, yet useful devices that could assist those seeking to be self-sufficient and live a simpler life without having to be so dependent on modern technology and the grid. These devices range from fruit pickers to water boilers using a barrel and an open fire, a \"one-man butchering rig\" to clothes washing with bicycle pedal power. Most all of the device instructions have a picture with them to aid in understanding the instructions.
Its author, Rolfe Cobleigh was Associate Editor of The American Agriculturalist. In the book introduction he writes, \"There are many handy devices, not made in any factory and not sold in any store, that every intelligent man can make himself, which save money and labor and time. We are trying, by words and pictures, to explain clearly just how to make each device. Everything described is tried and practical....In addition to the direct benefit to be derived from doing what the book tells how to do, we have in mind the larger purpose of education toward putting more thought into our work and doing what we have to do the easiest, the cheapest and the quickest way.\"
