THROUGH THE OPEN WINDOWS APPEARS A VIEW SO PERFECT that it seems unreal: the harvest moon rises serenely through the autumn sky, a flock of geese return at the day\'s end, cargo ships lie quietly at anchor, small boats set out for night fishing. The perfectly executed gradations of sea, sky, and horizon provide balance and elegance.

In contrast to the fullness and perfection of the view outside, the scene within is one of incompletion and indirection. Beneath a lantern on the tatami mat lie the leftovers of entertainment. An Imari dish of uneaten sashimi rests on a lacquer tray, the condiments still perfectly arranged. To the left a sake cup floats in a washing bowl. Beyond that lie scattered a half-opened fan, a tobacco pouch and pipe case, a smoking set with charcoal lighter and ashcup and two used towels. In the immediate foreground on the veranda are a pair of chopsticks, two large and presumably empty sake flasks, and a low lacquer table with a bowl. It is a mark of Hiroshige\'s genius that he can depict a mess no neatly.

At the very margins of the scene are two half-hidden figures. To the right we can make out the tip of a shamisen and its box, indicating that a geisha is packing up to leave. To the left, we know from the elaborate hair style, is a courtesan. From the garment slipping onto the tatami, we guess that she is preparing for bed; the customer has doubtless stepped out for a bath. Thus we have experienced the entire evening: the view over the moonlit sea by direct observation, the banquet by reading its leftovers, and the pleasure to come by erotic suggestion.
