J. A. Rohe Eb Upright ContraBass Saxhorn 3 Berliner Valves-Horn&Valves Restored For Sale

I have a very early fully professionally restored brass upright 3 Berliner Valves--the valves were all recently re-plated & re-fitted at Anderson\'s Silver Plating in Indiana--Eb Contrabass Saxhorn/Tuba with original detachable/adjustable lead pipe--by the famed maker J A Rohe of Paris, c. 1850 (Rohe was also in the USA in Philly & NYC at one point)--see \'Horn-U-Copia\'s\' info:

-Started as an importer in 1838. By 1846, he was making brass instruments as well as importing instruments. He is listed as Rohe & Leavitt from 1851 until 1864, when they were bought out by Stratton and Foote.

     This horn was found as a bag of parts and has been fully professionally restored, and now even the valves have been fully re-plated and re-fitted by the top plating company in the USA-Andersons. 

     On his website, noted restorer Robb Stewart has detailed info on the maker J A Rohe of Paris--a fascinating read--excerpts below:

\"...... taken this opportunity to do a little research into the mysterious Mr. Rohé.  At the time that the \"New Langwill Index\" was published in 1993, there was only a suggested link between J.A. Rohé in Paris, France, known only from the bell markings on instruments and Joseph Anton Rohé who was known to be active in the business, first in Philadelphia, in 1838 to 1839, and then in New York City, from 1840 until his death in 1869 (this date is now known to be wrong).  Collectors that came across the former name on instruments assumed that they predated the man\'s immigration to the US in 1838.  After coming across a number of the Paris marked instruments and never learning of any marked with the US cities, I theorized that Rohé was importing these into New York and selling them there during the time he lived there.  

Langwill reports of a partnership, \"Rohé and Leavitt\" in New York City between 1851 and 1863 and there are a number of instruments marked in this way that we can confidently say date from these years.  We might infer that the instruments marked \"JA ROHÉ À PARIS\" were most likely made between 1839 and 1850......\"

     The horn has some patches, etc. after restoration, but it is once again playable. I am amazed it plays at all after the way it was originally found and it\'s very early age.

    The lead pipe swivels and is locked down and is actually in the front of the horn! Fascinating design. Horn is 35\" tall & 10.5 bell diam. You can actually see these type of Rohe Eb tubas being used also in the Civil War--the 1st and 4th Massachusetts Regiment Bands from period images show the tuba players holding these instruments!!

     This is an important and ultra rare Eb contrabass Saxhorn! A true museum piece! Comes with a mouthpiece. No case.
