Immensely rare first edition of J.F. Coopers classic work. This book was released in two volumes and this is volume two. Oddly it seems to have the title page for both volume one and volume two bound back to back, whilst the rest of the book only contains the pages for volume two. I assume very long ago it was rebound with the string currently binding it and the had the loose title lane for vol. 1 and decided to throw it into the binding for vol. 2 for unknown reasons. I hope I described that clear enough. Please ask for clarification if you’re…unclear.
The book is in fairly rough condition as you can see. We can be satisfied that it’s survived at all though and appreciate what is present. I’m unsure of the originality of the cover boards. They look as if they could be original though. The first few pages are chipped and fragile but as you go on most of the pages are in a good state of preserve. There is foxing throughout. The bottoms of some of the pages have either been clipped a couple centimeters or the paper was just shorter on some pages originally. This is a great excretion rather than a rule but worth mentioning. The book has 329 pages which matches the original amount. The covers and pages are all bound together in one piece with nothing loose. This book came out of a New England estate collection and wound up at NH flea market of all places. A real rough diamond in the rough!
Please examine condition carefully. Complete American two volume 1st edition sets routinely sell for well over $2,000, even in poor condition. A set sold at Christie’s for over $5,000 (after fees) in 2001. As an individual volume I’ve priced this one well below half of what a two volume set would sell for. Ships ASAP! Thanks
