A Japanese WoodblockSurimono Print by Hokkei (1780-1850) Meiji Period
7 3/16 x 8 1/4 ins. (18.3 x 21 cms) Hokkei was one ofHokusai\'s best pupils and particularly known for many fine designs for surimono. As surimono were produced in small editions for specific purposes e.g. New Yearcards, poetry club circulars etc. the originals are very rare and veryexpensive. In the Meiji era ca. 1890 many were reprinted, usually known asAkashi reprints, after the town at which they were produced. Recent researchinto these reprints has divided them into A, B, C & D categories indescending order of quality, A being the finest and comparable in quality to theoriginals. The present example is an A class print. Many of the less finecategories have been simplified for reasons of economy, e.g. often the poem inthe top section is omitted and the range of colours and metallic pigments isreduced.
The design is from the series Goshiki Ban-tsuzuki OgiNagashi (Yellow Adonis Plant. A set of fans in flowing water in five colours). There is an identical example in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (seeukiyo-e.org). The prints is in excellent condition with extensive use ofmetallic pigments and embossing on the lower fan.

We do not sell for other dealers, we sell only our own stock. Nowadays many sellers, especially internet sellers, show items for sale not belonging to them, either because they have no actual stock of their own or they are advertising items, often of unknown origin, for clients on a commission basis. Such sellers often have very limited, highly conditional, or non-existent guarantees.
With 45 years experience of Asian Art & Antiques with retail premises here in Brighton and a worldwide reputation second to none, we are pleased to offer our customers our guarantee without time limit. A genuine antique is, of course, genuine for all time and not just for seven, fourteen or thirty days and so sellers not offering such a guarantee as ours should possibly be avoided.
-
We shall send you a headed invoice/receipt/guarantee for all sales where payment is made direct to us. If paying via Paypal you should print our their transaction details as your receipt.
4) Returns - We sell on using two formats; sale and "Buy It Now".
-
There are no returns for sale items unless we have made a fundamental mistake in our item description. All sale items are available to inspect here at our gallery prior to offerding. If you need more information prior to offerding, please ask.
-
For Buy It Now items returns will only be accepted if items are received back within 14 days in the same condition as sent by us. All delivery costs (the cost of sending it to you, and the cost of sending it back to us) to be paid by the buyer unless we have made a mistake (for example, we have sent the wrong item).
