This listing is for a model # P5137 Transit Survey from Keuffel and Esser. We are selling it as a consignment, and it is the first transit that we have listed. The unit itself comes in an old wooden box, which appears to be original as it has a plaque on the front that reads \"135552\" which is the serial number on the unit, and also corresponds to the serial number on the sticker inside of the door. We have no idea if this unit works, because we do not know how a transit is supposed to function. Cosmetically it appears to be in good condition, the glass parts have no cracks, the unit spins smoothly. When looking through the scope, you can focus the vision, but it appears to be all blurry (we tested this indoors, perhaps it works better with further objects). There is also a repair sticker inside of the door of the box which indicates a repair was made on 1/27/75 by Brunson Instrument Co in Kansas City, MO.

Keuffel and Esser started out in New York and sold drawing materials and drafting supplies. In 1876, K & E started selling surveying instruments. A four-story factory in Hoboken, New Jersey was completed four years later, and K & E was incorporated in 1889. In 1892, the company commissioned a building for their showroom and offices at 127 Fulton Street in Manhattan from the architecture firm of De Lomos & Cordes, who designed an 8-story brick and terra cotta building in the Renaissance Revival style. The building was completed in 1893, and the company occupied it until 1961. It was designated a New York City landmark in 2005.
