Gjoa Northwest Passage Sloop by Model ShipwaysSolid Hull Wood Ship Model Kit

This is a VINTAGE Gjoa Kit by Model Shipways. It is a rare find! There are not to many of this kit anywhere in the USA.

Brief History

The Gjoa was built in the Rosendal Shipyard on the Hardanger Fjord in Norway in 1872 for Capt. Ashjorn Sexe of Haugesund. She was sold in the 1880\'s to Capt. H.C. Johannessen on Tromso. In 1901 she was bought by Roald Amundsen for his expedition in search of the North West passage and was fitted out for the voyage at Tromso and Trondhjem. She was fitted with a 13hp auxiliary engine, gasoline tanks and extra deck shelter. She was strengthened internally as shown in the construction plans and sheathed up to the white wale with 3\" oak, with iron strapping at the stem.Gjoa left Oslo on June 16, 1903 with a crew of seven. The Arctic supplies-- dogs, sleds, and kayaks--were loaded at Disko, Greenland in July and further stores were taken on at Dalrymple Rock. At this point she was loaded so deeply her deck amidships was at water level. From December, 1903 to August, 1905, Gjoa was frozen at a place now call Gjoahavn in James Ross Strait, making scienctific observation. The winter of 1905-1906 was spent at King Island and on August 31,1906 the expedition arrived at Nome, Alaska. From there the Gjoa proceeded to San Francisco where the explorers left her and she was laid up at the Mare Island Navy Yard. Becoming leaky, the sloop was bought by Norwegian residents of San Francisco to be presented to the city and in 1909 she was hauled ashore through the breakers and placed in a position of honor in Golden Gate Park. On May 14, 1949 the rebuilt Gjoa was dedicated at San Francisco.

Please note, this is listed as a new kit because it has never been built, it has been in a closet and opened. I checked and it looks like all the parts are in the kit. The box has some wear to it but it is a solid box which holds the kit.

Sorry, we will not be responsible for any missing parts.
