NORITAKE Exquisite Decorative PANCAKE SERVER w/COVER, Hand Painted FLORAL w/GOLD, from Noritake Company in Noritake, Japan, circa 1918

DESCRIPTION:  The beautiful hand painted set was produced in a beautiful pattern of florals with gold using a green, pink, and yellow color palate on cream & white.  The design looks so classic.  There is a light cream wash band around the rim of the server plate ending at the z-verge and on the cover.  The rims are trimmed in gold as is the handle of the lid.  The scrollwork pattern is particularly beautiful. CONDITION:  While this pancake set is classified as used, the condition is excellent with only one area of concern.  There is one 1/8\" flake of gold missing on the plate\'s rim.  There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines.  There are no utensil marks or other wear on the gold.DIMENSIONS:  The server plate has a diameter of 7 7/8\" with a height of 7/8\".  With the lid in place, the height of the unit is 3\".

HISTORY/MARKS:    Morimura Bros. formed the trading and decorating company in 1876 which evolved into Noritake.  Noritake Company has a rich history of producing porcelain china all the way from  January 1, 1904 when the Nippon Toki Kaisha Ltd - the forerunner to the present Noritake Company - was formed in the village of Noritake, a small suburb near Nagoya, Japan with its huge kaolin clay sources.  The first reported U.S. registry for a Noritake backstamp for importing is 1911.  The backstamp on this piece is the red M-in-Wreath Mark with Noritake on the top.  Under that is \"Japan\" with \"Handpainted\" in a curve under the wreath .  In Collecting Noritake A to Z Art Deco & More, David Spain shows that Noritake substituted Japan for Nippon in their backstamps starting in 1918.  Spain identifies this mark as #25.1 which was used in 1918.  (Note that this says \"Japan\", not \"Made in Japan\" which was used in later years.)
