Up ofsale is a drinking glass tumbler featuring the 1961-1962 Ohio State BasketballSquad and their coach Fred Taylor.
On thefront side of the glass printed is “Ohio State Buckeyes, Fred Taylor, Coach,and 1961-1962” with a picture of Fred Taylor. The back has the Ohio O with a basketballplayer and has the names of the Buckeye Squad that year: JohnHavlicek, Jerry Lucas, Mel Nowell, Dick Reasbeck, Gary Gearhart, Doug McDonald,Gary Bradds, Gene Lane, Bob Knight, Don Flatt, Jim Doughty, LeRoy Frazier, DickTaylor.
That yearthe team’s record was 26-2(13-1, 1st in Big Ten). They ranked 1st in theFinal AP Poll. In the 1962 NCAAchampionships, Cincinnati, behind center Paul Hogue, beat the Bucks in thenational finals 71-59. The season was over, and so was the Lucas-Havlicek era, ending probably the bestrun in Ohio State basketball history.
Bob Knight was in the same class as Lucas and Havlicek. Due in part to the star power of the Ohio State teams, Bobby Knight received littleplaying times during his three years on the team. There is a fun story drawnfrom the 1961 NCAA Championship game, Knight came off the bench with 1:41 onthe clock and Cincinnati leading Ohio State, 61–59. In the words of then-OhioState assistant coach Frank Truitt, “Knight got the ball in the left frontcourt and faked a drive into the middle, then crossed over like he worked on itall his life and drove right in and laid it up. That tied the game for us, andKnight ran clear across the floor like a 100-yard dash sprinter and ran rightat me and said, \'See there, coach, I should have been in that game a long timeago!\'” Pretty fitting Bobby Knightstory. By the way, OSU lost that game.
