Ohara Koson (1877-1945) Japanese Woodblock Print \"Kingfisher and Iris\":
$295.00

DESCRIPTION:
Lovely Japanese woodblock print by Ohara Koson (1877-1945). I believe the title is \"Kingfisher and Iris\" and depicts a kingfisher in flight above a deep purple iris (kakitsubata) which is native to Japan. The image was originally created by Koson in 1926, but this is a later edition published by Watanabe from the original blocks, with the publishers 7 mm seal in the lower left corner.
The image area of the print is 9 1/4\" by just under 14 1/4\". The print is professionally matted and framed under glass in a black wood frame to a finished size of 12 1/2\" by 17 1/2\".
The print is matted and framed under glass and I have not removed it from the frame. There are three small, faint spots of foxing in the sky area of the image, below the kingfisher (see last picture).Ohara Shoson (Koson) - Known primarily for his kacho-e (bird and flower subjects), Shoson produced a number of nature prints in the early 20th century. Early in his life, he studied painting at the Shijo School under the artist Susuki Kason. When Watanabe reopened after the devastating 1923 earthquake, he recruited Japan’s premiere shin-hanga artists to help rebuild the woodblock print business, including Ohara Shoson. Watanabe began publishing Shoson’s prints in 1926. Shoson’s work became quite popular with the Western market, especially in the United States. During his lifetime, Shoson used several different \"go\" or artist names, including Shoson, Koson, and Hoson. His lovely shin-hanga kacho-e are widely regarded as the best of the genre.
