ORIGINAL 1860\'S CIVIL WAR ARTILLERY CAISSON OR LIMER LOCK
This is an original, 1860\'s, Civil WarPeriod Brass and Cast Iron Artillery Cannon Caisson Padlock or Limber Lock withno key.
These Cannon Caisson Locks were used to lock the powder and projectilemagazine on a cannon limber. The powder chest on the cannon caisson was lockedbut in the course of time during the War, the artillery soldiers would discardthese Locks for the sake of quickness when loading the cannon. These locks wereissued by the Rock Island Arsenal and after the Civil War were reissued to lockthe cartridge magazines on Gatling Gun caissons during the Indian War period.
This original Civil War period Caisson Lockmeasures 1-5/8” at its widest and 2-1/8\" at its tallest. It is heavy forits size and made of cast brass and iron. The lock does not retains itsoriginal key (I have attached a pictures of what the key looks like) which isinserted into the lock mechanism and turned counterclockwise a number of timesthus disengaging the stop which passes through the loop of the lock allowing itto be opened. This is an original, 1860’s Civil War Artillery Caisson lock, itis not a reproduction.
