Originalantique lithographed 1863 fold-out United States Coast Survey map: PreliminaryChart of Half Moon Bay, California, printedmore than 155 years ago.

• The map is drawn on a scale of 1:20,000, and the image area measures45.7 x 49 cm [18" x 19¼"].
• It locates Whaleman’s Harbor and Pillar Point, two of thewhaling stations that dotted the California coast between San Diego andCrescent City during the latter half of the 1800s.
• Other details includesoundings, tides, bottom conditions, a compass rose, and directionallandmarks such as "Widow Wood's House and Bald Pate in Range."
• Other notes locate Sail Rock, Thick Kelp, and Rocks Awashat Half Tide.
• The map was issued under the direction of A.D. Bache in Reportof the Superintendent of the Coast Survey, showing the Progress of theSurvey during the Year 1863, published in Washington, D.C. bythe Government Printing Office in 1864.
• Condition:Like many government fold-out maps ofthemid-19th century, it is printed on a lightweight paper which hastonedslightly along the folds and on the rear side of twopanels, a bitexaggerated by the camera.
