Original WWII US Army snow/ winter camouflaged M-1 combat helmet and matching liner. Shell is a fixed bail, front seam type, has a dimple on the rim by each chin strap bail. I believeit may have been converted from an early fixed bail shell, heat number is \"494A\", bails are not painted on the inside where they\'re spot welded to the shell, they also appear to be stainless steel. Top of shell has several small dents and there are a few typical stress cracks on the back of the shell. Helmet finish is extremely worn from combat use. Shell has an overcoat of what appears to be whitewash or thin white paint,it has yellowed over time. Interior of shell has light rust and a faded white discoloration commonly seen in original ETO combat helmets. Chin straps are original replacements and are not sewn on to the shell. They haven\'t been cut, just the bar tack, so they could be easily re-stitched on. Chin straps are the early khaki type with bronze hardware and a bronze stepped buckle. They are worn and match the helmet perfectly. Liner was made by Westinghouse, has khaki webbing with blackened brass hardware, no chips or cracks,all webbing intact, no tears or dry rot. Liner appears to have been overpainted at least once with olive drab paint and then painted or whitewashed white which was subsequently rubbed or scraped off leavingwhite residue around the rivets and grommet and scattered about the olive drab.Helmet and liner were found together and appear to match other than the whitewash being removed. This beautiful original WWII camouflage M-1 combat helmet will make a superb addition to your collection.
