A Matched Pair of Navajo Sand Paintings

Item: A pair of well executed sand-paintings.
Medium: Colored sand in medium on board
Date: 2nd half 20th century
Signed: Both signed on attached notes on rear.
Dimensions: Each painting measures about 13 inches high by 7 inches wide.
Condition: In about very good overall condition with light surface soiling and an occasional scuff with minor bumps and bruises to support.
Notes: Given the similar name, works by this artist have been attributed to silver craftsman Harvey Begay (War Eagle) but the Two Grey Hills Tuhatchi, NM 87325 address does not support this. There is record of a Navajo artisan named Harvey Begaye, although his known address is that of Box 1995 Shiprock, N.M. 87420.
Harvey Begay (Native American Artisan, b. 1939, d. 2009)
Harvey Begay’s work has been acclaimed throughout the country and internationally, winning him over 40 awards in various juried exhibitions, including First Place Prize at the prestigious Santa Fe Indian Market and at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona. In 2005 he was given the prestigious Arizona Living Treasures Award. His work was featured in numerous books and magazines.
As a younger man, Begay served as the backseat radio officer in an F-4 Phantom interceptor jet and saw combat in Vietnam during the mid-1960s. He was however best known for his contemporary Native American jewelry. He was a respected member of the board of trustees at the Hurd Museum in Phoenix.
