Pre Columbian Colima Sitting Mother and Child, ca. 200BC-200AD
From ancient western Mexico, a beautifully crafted terracotta mother sitting and holding her young child in one arm while the arm otherrests on her stomach. The child, who faces toward the rear, has arms that claspher shoulder and arm while his legs are entwined around her side. The mother isadorned with headdress, earrings,necklace and a shoulder ornament.Her child wears a cap. The piece, 4.75” tall, is testimony to theenduring theme of maternal-love and the child’s face conveys a sense ofcuriosity. Ample traces of originalpinkish-orange pigment remain. In finecondition. Excellent provenance: formerly of the WeismanCollection. Acquired in the 1950s-60s.
