RARE 1867 B. Pike\'s Son Surveyors Transit - 1 of only a couple Pike Transits:
$750.00

This is a raretransit made by BenjaminPike, Pike is known to have made many large surveyors compasses but very few transits. There is only 1 other Pike transit I have seen and it is staying in my collection; the scope on this measures 9 1/2\" long, the plate is 6 3/4\" diam. and the compass needle is 5\" long. Optics and cross hairs are good, and motions are turning freely; this transit has much of its original blacked or blued finish which is amazing considering the year. There is no box ortripod, just what you see in the photos nothing else.Postage is $25.00if within the US, more if you are outside the USA; no charge for careful packing.

Here is some information on the makerBenjamin Pike:

Benjamin Pike

1777-1863

Benjamin Pike (1777–1863) was bornin London, moved to New York in 1798, and set up shop as an optician. Bymid-century, Pike and his sons were the leading dealers of mathematical, optical, and philosophical instruments in New York City, with customers allacross the country. Benjamin Jr. (1808–1864) joined his father in business in1831, trading as Benjamin Pike & Son. In 1841, when Daniel joined the firm, the name changed to Benjamin Pike & Sons. It became Benjamin Pike’s Son in 1867, and remained in business until1916.

Some instruments with a Pike signature may have been made by craftsmenworking for the Pikes, and under their direction. Others were made in workshopsand factories elsewhere in the United States, and some were made abroad. Thosemarked \"Warranted\" were probably made for the Pikes, but not by them. But the Pikes probably made the several instruments that they displayed atlocal exhibitions. At the 1837 fair sponsored by the Mechanics’ Institute ofNew York, Benjamin Pike & Son won a silver medal for their \"verysuperior mountain barometer & theodolyte compass.\" At the 1854 NewYork State Agricultural Society exhibition, Benjamin Pike Jr. won a silvermedal for the \"best set of surveyors’ instruments\" and a diploma forhis theodolite.
