Extremely rare WWII AAF anti-flak flying helmet, nomenclature \"Project H-28-CL\" made from overlapping plates of steel, covered with dark brown leather and a chamois lining. This is essentially the exact same helmet as the M-4 Grow helmet developed in England for the US 8th air force, with the addition of leather covered steel ear protectors and a sewn starinsignia made from a separate piece of yellow leather. Very little is known about this helmet, and the purpose of the yellow star has always been a mystery. H-28-CL helmets wereobviously contracted by the AAF and had an official order number (printed on the nice clear label inside, which also bears an inspection / acceptance stamp) and it has been supposed that they were experimental and possibly service tested operationally but not adopted for widespread use because the war ended. Manufactured by Fox Chase Knitting Mills (I. Miller Parachute Division). Overall condition is good. There is obvious storage wear and scuffing, especiallyto the edges (in a couple of places the canvas padding and steel is showing through, but this is minimal). Some loss of leather to the very edge of the star but this hardly shows and the star is perfectly sound and secure. Overall it displays very well and is a rare AAF item.
I ship worldwide as long as the mail service is reliable and trackable, and will gladly group items together to save on shipping costs.
