Rare Antique Colonial SLIDING Candle Holder, Revolutionary War, Hogscraper, GIFT:
$120.00

Very Rare, CLEAN, TALL EARLY ANTIQUE 1770-1800 COLONIAL PERIOD "SLIDING" CANDLE HOLDER, "Hogscraper"

DESCRIPTION:Scans show it all.....RARE, early antique colonial period large "sliding" candle holder from my personal collection. Also known at the time as a "hogscraper". Very substantial and is made of heavy sheet steel. A bit taller than most, about 7 1/2" tall x 4" diameter at the base. Allows greater movement of the candle. This has great lines, and really reflects its early age and period.

This style was designed to hold a hand made candle inside the "tube" of the holder. Has a movable or sliding "pedestal" inside the tube on which the candle rests. As it burns, it can be slid up about 3", as needed, using the lever/spring shown, to expose more of the candle for burning. Sliding tab and spring on this one work very well and smoothly. It is a great looking, early, very functional design and item!! A CLASSIC LOOK AND A GREAT EARLY DECORATOR for a desk, a mantel, or on a shelf, etc. A GREAT PIECE OF PRIMITIVE AMERICANA!!!

These are often called "hogscrapers" as IN TRUE YANKEE SPIRIT they were used for 2 purposes!! In addition to holding candles, they were used to "scrape" the hides of hogs during butchering or tanning to remove the thick, tough hair on them. They would hold it by the shaft, upside down, and use the sharp round base edge as a scraper. Very tough, sharp metal edge on the bottom, and it performed the function quite well! This is a primary reason why the top "hanger"/tab is usually missing......during scraping work it could cut your hand badly if the tool slipped, so it was often removed through use or intentionally.

Nice aged appearance and patina, although very clean. Has an even surface and patina, giving it a nice early look, with virtually no rust. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND THESE TODAY.

This can still be used as a functional itemor as a nice original early antique colonial decorative item. It is an actual earlycolonial piece, and I would estimate it was made no later than 1770 - 1800. Could have been used on the desk of a Revolutionary War officer while doing his paperwork.

Really looks the part. Would look great displayed on an early desk or on an early kitchen, dining room, or family room shelf, etc. Even in an office or man-cave. Looks great with a nice early style candle.

It is in nice original conditionoverall. Great early body, decorative lines, base, and surface finish. This was originally from a local New England estate, and part of a very early antique lighting collection.
