This week I am taking a bit of a departure from my regular jewelry listings to offer four extremely rare Japanese medals. These medals date somewhere just before to during World War II and were(are) some of the highest awards presented by the Japanese and Manchukuo empires. All information provided in this sale was obtained from James W. Peterson\'s book ORDERS AND MEDALS OF JAPAN AND ASSOCIATED STATES. Please feel free to email me with any questions regarding these amazing pieces of militaria. Up for sale is an extremely rare and quite extraordinary Japanese medal. This medal is part of the Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum which was the highest award bestowed by the Japanese empire. The badge is made of gold gilt silver set with a translucent red glass cabochon at center and accented with green, yellow, and white enamel. It was produced by the Osaka Mint and bears the mintmark M on the side edge near the suspension knob. The characters on the underside translate to \"GRAND MERIT DECORATION\". The piece measures approx 80mm(3 1/8 inches) in overall length including the ring at top x 55mm(2 1/8 inches) wide and weighs approx 38.5 grams. This piece falls somewhere between the size of the collar badge and the Grand Cordyn badge. I am unsure of it\'s purpose as it is also fairly larger than the small badge mentioned on page 9 of Peterson\'s book. There is a fairly large scratch of one side of the glass cabochon and other light signs of wear. A smaller badge can be found in a separate sale.
