We are listing this superb and quite striking looking late 1800s to early 1900s stoneware jug/stein which bears the raised double eagle crest of the Austro-Hungarian Empire on its front. The Austro-Hungarian Empire (also known as Austria-Hungary and the Dual Monarchy) existed from 1867 to 1918, and thus it is the likely this piece was made within that time period. Since Germany produced most of the stoneware of that period, I suspect it was made at a German pottery. The beautiful cobalt blue glaze color on the gray stoneware, and to some extent the decorative style, is similar to some Westerwald pieces from earlier centuries, but the style of the jug\'s superb domed pewter lid, the dating on this piece, and the marking on its base (the incised number 620) makes it more likely that it was made by one of the major Bavarian stein producers (this might well be considered a very robustly shaped stein). In addition to the previously mentioned cobalt blue glaze, domed lid, and Austro-Hungariancrest, the jug features a nicely curled handle and elaborate raised feather, heart, and stylistic flower designs covering its body. All this makes the jug a very striking display piece, as well as a functional drinking piece. With its lid the jug is 7.75 inches tall (6 inches to the top of its rim), 6 inches at its widest point, it makes a wonderful very impressive looking display piece, and it is in very good condition (there is the expected wear to the top of the rim caused by the lid).
