The welcoming beginning to the 1943 Caldecott Medal winner, Virginia Lee Burton's The Little House. "Taking her cue from her small sons, Aristides and Michael, Burton chose subjects that would intrigue children [including] Mary Ann, the steam shovel [Burton’s books] have heroes and heroines children can understand and enjoy, ingenious and satisfactory endings and lively illustrations. The books survive because they exhibit so effectively the elements most basic to children’s literature" (Silvey, 109-10).

Condition:

Binding square but lose. Original full-bound cloth with illustrated front presents fairly clean with a few spots to front, some light pen-marks to rear, and fading and toning to edges. Heavy wear to creases, corners, hinges, head and foot of spine, and spine with a few closed tears and some loss. Internally about clean and unmarked with only a few light spots and a mild crease to bottom of front endpaper and title page. Full separation at gutter of title page. A very rare example.
