Thomas Whelan Benton (1930-2007) was an American artist best known for his political posters and silkscreen artwork.His friendship and collaboration with gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson spanned more than four decades and created or inspired some of Benton’s most recognized works, including a series of political posters that combined Benton\'s art and Thompson\'s writing — the Aspen Wall Posters.
Benton went on to create campaign posters for more than fifty candidates including George McGovern, Gary Hart and Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis.He also created numerous cause posters for local benefits, non-profits and charitable causes that suited his beliefs.Benton’s art continued to evolve throughout his lifetime from political posters to abstract silkscreen prints, monotypes and oil paintings.Bentonwas diagnosed with advanced lymphoma in early 2007, and died April 27, 2007.
